Headaches are one of the most common conditions experienced by Australians and many consider them to be an normal part of life. Often we rely on over the counter painkillers to mask the symptoms of headache in order to move on with our day, however ongoing reliance on these medications can be detrimental to our health.
At The Whole Body Clinic we are aware that headaches can be caused by a multitude of reasons. Identifying the root cause of your headache or migraine allows us to implement a specific treatment plan to provide longer term management and relief of your symptoms.
Types of Headache & Migraine
Some of the headache types we commonly treat are:
A mild to moderate headache that usually presents at the base of the skull. You may also experience the pain spreading into the top of your head or to your forehead. These types of headache may be caused by poor posture while sleeping, working or after a long time in an awkward positon leading to joint inflammation in the neck.
A common and mild type of headache that may be caused by poor posture at work, increased stress loads, fatigue and jaw clenching. These headaches commonly present as a vice-like pressure around your head and are usually worse at the end of the day.
There are many different presentations of migraines and pain can be felt in many different positions. They normally last between 4-72 hours and can be accompanied with nausea or vomiting, sensitivity to light or sound or even changes in vision.
Treatment For Headaches
Osteopaths are highly skilled practitioners that will determine what type of headache you are suffering, as there are many more types of additional headaches that are not listed here. Once properly diagnosed, gentle Osteopathic techniques such as soft tissue massage, stretching, joint mobilisation and articulation can help to relax tense muscles and tissues that maybe causing or contributing to the headache, and improve joint mobility through the neck - particularly the upper neck and base of the skull. Proper diagnosis, treatment and education can help you resolve or manage the symptoms in the long term.
