Causes Of Neck Pain

Some common neck conditions we can assist with are:

Disc Injury

What Is The Condition?

In your spine, you have bony vertebrae and spongy discs. These discs are designed to absorb shock and protect your vertebrae from any compression. Each disc has a stronger outer rim, called the 'annulus fibrosis' which encompasses a softer, more spongy 'nucleus pulposus'. An acute injury can damage a disc, but more commonly the annulus gradually becomes weakened from minor tearing over time, which leads to weakening making it vulnerable to injury.

Symptoms

Minor tearing to the annulus may present as mild to moderate and localised pain. If the damage to the disc becomes worse, then the internal components pushing out near the nerve and may compress it. This will result in severe pain with pain referral to different parts of the arm. A compressed nerve will produce symptoms of numbness or tingling in the arm, hand or fingers and may cause weakness in muscles.

Common Causes

Most commonly the annulus gradually becomes damaged from minor tearing over time, which leads to weakening making it vulnerable to injury. A few common examples are repeated minor injury over a longer period of time from compression with head contact in sport, straining from repeated lifting or years of prolonged poor postures.

Acute trauma is also a common cause. Injury can come from any significant force or impact to the neck or head. Car accidents and whiplash injury, or work place injuries are common examples.

Who Does It Affect?

The prevalence of disc injuries increases with age, but it is most commonly diagnosed for people in their 50's. However, injury also commonly affects people in their 20's and 30's where

At The Whole Body Clinic, we can assist the body to heal these damaged tissues, improve stability and strength through the damaged region with a personalised rehabilitation program and decrease your pain short term and long term.

Facet Joint Sprains

What Is The Condition?

Your facet joints are small joints on the back part of your vertebrae. They allow many different movements in your spine. A capsule of ligaments surrounds each facet joint. Sometimes these ligaments can become irritated or torn if they are stretched or compressed.

Symptoms

You may have woken with a 'crook neck' before. This is a common example of an irritated facet joint. When injury occurs it will result in restriction of movement - often in one particular direction, and pain which worsens with that particular movement or prolonged sitting or standing.

Common Causes

Sudden movements, lifting or carrying, sleeping or lying in an awkward position for an extended period or mild whiplash injury are all common causes.

Often pain develops after doing something very innocuous that normally wouldn't cause injury. In these cases the cause was likely to do with a build up of tension in the muscles of the neck, shoulders or upper back which impairs their ability to stabilise and support the spine and facet joints.

Who Does It Affect?

Facet joint injuries are common and can affect both the young and old.
